Korea, and Jeju in particular, make a pretty good effort at being environmentally conscious. In other blog posts you might have read about the process to sort trash and recycling. Part of these environmental conservation efforts involve having your car inspected on a regular basis to see if they are working properly, and just about how much harm are they doing to the environment.
If you decide to buy a car, you might have to do this sooner rather than later. Asking whether the car has had an inspection recently (and whether it passed) could be a good question to ask when it's time to buy your Jeju car. If it hasn't been done, your car inspection might be overdue, in which case it might cost more. A car inspection should be done every two years or so. When it's time, you'll get a notice in the mail that looks like the image on top. This notice will indicate what you need to do, and when do you have to do it by. Appointments can be booked online at the address listed on the notice, or via phone at the listed phone number (find a Korean speaker to help you). To book your appointment, you will need: - You car registration number (which is your license plate number; again, it's important to find a Korean speaker to help you because this number includes a Korean character). - Your ARC number - Your bank account number to provide - you'll have to transfer the inspection cost in advance. You will book your appointment for a specific day, you can show up at any point during the testing place's opening hours. You need to bring your car registration, inspection notice, and ARC (although we were not asked for any of this). Also, bringing your proof of payment for car taxes (a bill for car taxes will come twice a year in the mail) could be good. The inspection consists on lining your car (with several others) to have a diagnostic and make sure the car is up to driving standards. The whole test takes no more than 10 minutes. You may get recommendations at the end of your test (for instance, we were told we need to replace our tires...which we could have probably guessed). That's it! It may seem like a small thing, but it's a good idea to do especially if you intend to resell your car at the end of your time in Jeju.
