PLEASE READ - VERY IMPORTANT FOR DOG OWNERS -
NEW RULING FOR DOGS AS FROM MARCH 22, 2018 -
As of March 22, 2018 - These are LAWS: -
1 - All dogs must be leashed when out walking. No leash length restriction.
2 - All dogs over three months old must be registered with the Korean Government via a registered Veterinarian. (Look below - the green writing - to check how to get your dog registered)
NOTE- SOFA registered families are NOT required to do this
3 - All dogs must wear a dog- tag with dog registration number and on the other side, owner’s name and phone. Even if your dog is chipped.
4 - Pick up poop after your dog (FYI- Bags are easily available at Vet's clinics and online).
5 - Five “dangerous” breeds must always have muzzle.
Main ones: Pit Bullls, Staffies, Bull Terrier, Rottweilers, Tosa AND the mixes of any of those.
Registering your dog
1. Take a photo of your dog to the vet - If you use Dr. Kang in Jeju City (AKA Shin Jeju) as your vet, you will be given a (phone) number to send the photo to, so it is helpful to have your phone with you with the photo ready to send.
2. Fill out a form - you should have your dog's microchip number handy. Write their microchip number and your information on it (address, phone numbers etc.). The vet should help you with this.
3. The vet will send it in to the appropriate office -
You’ll get an ID card in the mail that looks like this. Depending on your vet, the ID card may well have your dog's photo on it.
IMPORTANT: the following are NOT laws: -
- Muzzle for dogs over certain height is NOT a law. (Having said that, it might be prudent to prevent a situation from happening. If your dog is of, for example, a Labrador size, it is recommend having a muzzle in very public places regardless of the breed, to avoid confrontations that may turn ugly. At least for now, and see how it goes.)
- Dog 'paparazzi' getting reward for pics of violators was INDEFINITELY POSTPONED under privacy concerns.
- Maximum 2 meter leash.
Coming in 2019: -
- a law about 2 meter leashes
- adding more aggressive dogs to the list of five is to be decided
- muzzle laws for bigger (40cm) dogs
- muzzle laws for dogs that are deemed a risk.

4 - Pet Sitting
One thing you will notice right from the get-go, is that it is difficult to find a pet sitter for vacation time, as everyone wants to leave to go on holiday. Some community spirit of give-and-take has to happen in order for everyone to get a chance to take a break, and to make sure your fur-babies are taken care of properly.
There is one kennel on the island that some people have used, and while it seems to be OK for a short stay, many people will put on their night vision goggles and hunt for a petsitter instead of kennelling their pets for any length of time.
Some kind people who stay behind at holiday time may be inclined pet sit your animal, sometimes for free if they are a good friend, but mostly for a fee. Here are some usual ball park figures. All of these depend on the sitter, the number of pets, what is required for each pet, and the situation: -
- Cats - usually 10,000-15,000 KW a day, depending on how many cats, and what is required of the sitter
- Dogs - usually 10,000-15,000 KW a day, depending on how many times you need the dog to be walked, and what else is required of the sitter.
- Dog walking - roughly 10,000 a walk
The people willing to pet sit are not always the same people however, so there is no one go-to person. It's very much a case of someone's holiday plans fell through, or someone needs to save a bit of money and decided to stay home instead of travelling, etc. If anyone who is staying behind is feeling kind, they may help you help out with this. It is not a given that they will. And more importantly, if they do it once it doesn't mean they will do so every time (please see the Cautionary Tale below).
You may be able to find someone on the GEC Social FaceBook page from other schools who might be able to help, or on the Jeju Social page, or you might even try your own school's Facebook Page. It's always worth a go.
It is hoped that as the GEC grows, so will the availability of pet sitters and suitable places to kennel your pets. But for now, it is what it is. If any one is willing to get together to work on creating a service for this... let us know! There are many of us in need.
Never forget... there is always the option to stay home with your pet! It's quite relaxing and you save a ton of money ;-)

CAUTIONARY TALE - Once upon a time, there used to be one or two kind animal-loving people who were happy to help out with this.
However, they were over-used, taken for granted, and overall treated as though pet sitting was their duty (because they were staying behind instead of going on vacation) and their job in addition to their day-job. They were expected to give up considerable amounts of their time for free, and the favour was never reciprocated.
This misuse of goodwill has resulted - not surprisingly - in them no longer helping people at all with this.
Moral - Never forget... there is always the option to stay home with your pet!
5 - VETS IN JEJU - Pet health and upkeep
You may need to visit a vet sometimes, for yearly shots, etc... There are not many, and each has pros and cons. Ask around for each individual preferences. The first name on the list has had good recommendations for day to day care, shots, and non-urgent health matters (e.g. ear infections, allergies).

퍼스트독 (FIRSTDOG) |
A place for pet needs (selection of supplies, toys, treats, etc) |
Here is an over-all vet/clinics site with some very useful information of varying places in Korea. http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/ Please note that areas within easy reach for us are Moseulpo, DaeJong, Seogwipo and Jeju (or Shin Jeju). Click the 'Vet Clinics' tab ;-)
BTW - There are many clinics in Seoul that can help with overseas transportation etc... Again, it's a short flight away ;-)
Incidentally, there is a type of 'Feline Friends Society' here in Jeju, that will help catch and neuter/spay stray cats. The cats will released back in the place where they were picked up after they have recovered. FYI - Be sure to ask about this on the GEC FaceBook page for information ;-)
Also, instead of buying a pet, why not check out this site? https://rescuekorea.org/
