Don’t worry, there are English speakers to help you at the Immigration Office (See bottom of this post for the address and map to the Immigration Office). And just call your HR dept. if you have communication problems. (064-902-5000 for BHA then ask for HR; other schools can find their main school numbers HERE)
1. Lost ARC card
You will need: -
- original passport
- 1 passport size photo
- fee: 30,000KRW(ARC card fee) + 80,000KRW(Application fee)
- application form (can be found in HR or at the immigration office)
- evidence of Residence (teachers’ ARC is registered with BHA address so this can be substituted with school business
certificate, which can be found in HR)
(If immigration officer ask, just say you live in a school provided residence.)
2. Change of Passport/ Passport renewal
1. Please get your passport renewed at least 6 months before the expiration date, irrespective of your ARC validity period. Passports must be renewed well in advance to prevent issues with legitimacy of your presence in Korea, visas for travel, and oddly enough being able to receive your US salary into your Korean bank account.
2. After you receive your new passport, please share a copy of it to HR immediately. New passports must be reported to the Immigration Office within 14 days, failing which a penalty maybe imposed on the faculty concerned by the Immigration office.
You will need: -
- your new passport
- application form (can be found in the immigration Office)
- copy of front and back side ARC, also original ARC
This can be done via FAX if it’s within 14 days, so you can go to HR and they can help you with this. There is a form to fill and HR have these forms.
But after 14 days, it needs to be reported at the Immigration Office in person, and you can be fined for failing to do this - up to 100,000 KRW per week that you are late in reporting your new passport. (See bottom of this post for the address and map to the Immigration Office in Jeju City)
As an aside... So far it hasn't been heard of that anyone has actually been fined. You might be lucky and they might let you off with it if you are being nice……..but it’s something that shouldn’t be said out loud and officially, because it can very easily change to the official party line at anytime, or it can depend on whether the person who is dealing with you is having a good day, or if you are being not nice to them... just report it within 14 days, OK? ;-) The longer you wait, the more time you go without the US portion of your salary being able to be put into your account.
3. HR will update your local Korean bank of your new passport. Kindly note that the local banks in Korea won't be able to process your USD salary portion if you passport has already expired. This is based on the Korean financial regulation on foreign currency transactions.
3. New ARC registration for a newborn baby
*note: Dependent visa is F-3 and work visa is E-7.
So, when you apply for new F-3 visa, the E-7 holder has to go to immigration office in person. For example, if you have E-7 and your spouse has F-3, then it is you who have to go to the immigration office to apply for your baby’s visa. (Don’t worry, it's only for the first time when you apply for the F-3 visa - extension can be done by someone else).
*Application must be made after your child is born.
You will need: -
- birth Certificate
- baby’s passport (Yes, I know… we are in Jeju and it’s quite inconvenient to get this document as you will have to go to your national Embassy in Seoul for this and have to get it done).
Check out where to find your embassy here.... http://jeju101.weebly.com/embassies.html
- baby’s passport size photo
- both parents' ARC copy (front and back side) along with the Original ARCs
- 30,000KRW (ARC card fee) + 80,000KRW (Application fee) - Keep the receipts for this one! (School support dependent’s visa
fee.)
- evidence of Residence (Same as mentioned above, school business certification can be used)
