A new supermarket has opened on the 1132 going towards Moseulpo. It is called HanRo, a very popular Korean supermarket. I checked it out and it is a cross between E-mart and W-mart. You'll find all you would normally find in a Korean supermarket, so W-Mart still wins for imported stuff. Here are some pics of the outside and a few sneaky ones of the inside. NB - they have the kind of shopping cart/trolleys that need the 100 KWR coin to use them. Here is the Google Maps Link:- For those new to the GEC this is not a big deal... so there's a supermarket in the GEC... so what?! But for those of you who have been here for longer than a year, you know what a game changer this is. Now, as well as Market Origin on the other side of the hub that is becoming a center of focus, now there is also another option to do your shopping!
This allows you to go up the road (or down the street) to pick up a few things or even do a whole weekly shop... all within five minutes of where you will be working. Those of us who were here before W-mart opened in Moseulpo, remember the days where we had to drive +45 minutes to either Jeju city or Seogwipo to the E-mart/Lotte Mart/Home Plus/Martro stores. Revel in this, GECers! This is awesome news! And check out the new ATM just next to the Edu City Mart across from the side entrance ;-) Here's how to order... FYI - you don't have to do all of this! You will be very full ;-)
There is a variety of tofu on the menu so this is good for vegans and vegetarians too. There are free refills on the soup and the basket of vegetables that are brought to your table. Ask your server for the soup to be refilled, and help yourself to the vegetable refills
This is a relatively new nail salon in the GEC. The main difference is between this and other options for nail care in the GEC is ... it has those lovely fancy spa chairs, there are massages available AND callus removal. A truly, 'remember-how-we-have-them-back-home' experience that can usually only be found in Seoul.
YooHee, the owner, speaks excellent English and seems to be open every day. (She can also be open on Saturdays if you make an arrangement with her well in advance.) As you will see, there are only two chairs available, and presently there is only her working in the salon. However, she has plans to hire another person when the GEC is populated again (i.e. not during holiday time and the GEC is like a ghost town). There is a menu of options for both manis and pedi (e.g. callus removal, wet/dry mani/pedis, massage, gel colour, etc.). There are also a few items for foot and nail care for sale, which again is a pleasant addition to the ever growing GEC arsenal of commodities. FYI - It is recommended that you make an appointment! Check the number to call inthe photos below. This vet is OPEN from 09:00-19:00 - lunchtime is 12:30-14:00
It is CLOSED Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday. THIS HAS NOW MOVED TO ABOVE THE CHINESE MEDICINE CLINIC IN MOSEULPO For those who can remember it, this is in the place where the Italian restaurant "Forchetta" used to be.
It is very close to the GEC. It offers Afternoon Tea for around 30,000KW, and is said to be worth the money. There are only two tables inside so don't go with a big crowd! The carrot cake was very nice and cost 6,500! It also sells a select assortment of artsy knick knacks, plates, notepads, glasses, goblets, champagne flutes (made of plastic... but very cute), etc. There is a larger store in Seoul. This hair salon is about 5 mins away from the GEC.
Head towards Moseulpo. Pass the Lonpanew Tea/Art deco place on the right. Just after that there on the right are the Green Organic shop and Mr. Book. Opposite them, there is a 3-storey building. On the ground floor is a cafe/brunchy kind of place called "From the Hill" - Serves nice coffee, breakfasts, sandwiches - English spoken. On the middle floor is a plastic/cosmetic surgeon (botox, collagen, simple procedures...) On the top floor, up three flights of stairs on the side of the building, is #1008 Hair. One of the hairdressers - his name is Elba - worked in Sydney, Australia, for a good while, and speaks very good English. They already need appointments to be booked! Make sure you call ahead of time! Elba says they offer a full range of hair services, including cuts, styling, colour (even for blond haired people), foils, tinting, and they seem to have some very fancy up-to-date equipment. They can also do Manicures and pedicures, although not sure if it is a full-on wet/spa pedicure FYI - a simple wash and blow is 25,000 KW. Zen Restaurant has opened a coffee shop/brunch/bread shop called Tropical Hideaway.
It offers things like a signature burger, salads, open sandwiches, salmon and avocado croissant with salad, loaded french fries, soups, etc... It’s between Hey Brother and Starbucks by Sagye Beach near Songak San. The view is quite something, and the interior is very similar to Zen's eclectic taste. Tropical Hideaway also sells some beautiful loaves of bread (sourdough, country loaves, ciabattas, baguettes), croissants, and brownies, not to mention cakes offered by Zen to take away by the slice ;-) 77-4 Sangmo-ri, Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo, Jeju-do https://goo.gl/maps/XYGvz2A9vAo It's good to go for a drive sometimes and spend the afternoon on the beach - or even just to get out of the GEC for a little while. And if you get hungry... well, there's this little place that makes really tasty fish'n'chips, right on the beach front (There is a "Twosome place" coffee shop there too).
New hair place opened in the summer 2018, above By Orga and Olive Chicken... we are now officially spoiled for choice!
Details to follow... Falafel, pirogi, Mexican inspired dishes, different types of hummus, and dessert slices... check out a sample menu below... All of it is delicious! And SO CLOSE!
The Canvas also sells frozen made-on-the-premises food to take away - for example: - artichoke and spinach lasagna, traditional mac&cheese, Kimchi mac&cheese, falafel to heat up at home, butter chicken, pirogi, and other assorted goodness. Some dishes are vegan and it is clearly marked on the container. The silver containers are a thing of wonder... they can be re-used, and the silver part can be used in both a conventional oven AND in the microwave! The lid obviously can't but this is impressive nonetheless. Opened in March 2018. The owners are from San Francisco, and are called Sun and Christiane Kim.
On offer is pizza, pasta, salad and side dishes, with options for set menus, build your own pizza, signature pizzas, and a 'single pizza option' which includes an 8"pizza, a soda and fries all for 10,500 KW, and is a really good deal (See below for photos). Directions: - Coming from the GEC
Oh ... and the pepperoni is real, honest-to-goodness pepperoni! There’s a new really nice salon close by. East Imperial Hair Shop is inside the Shinhwa development in the residential side, not the Theme park and Hoel side. Very limited English, but if you go in armed with a photo and a Translating app it works just fine. - Comfy hair washing chairs - Head and neck massage - Kerastaste products - Ability to permanently straighten hair without breaking it all off ( most important) Directions:
Also, they have a NAIL SALON that does real pedicures, with exfoliation etc.
This restaurant has really good pizza, salads, etc., and has vegetarian options. There is a good selection of wine and beers, too. The pizzas are cooked in a traditional forno a legna (wood oven). The dough is light and thin and tastes goo-oo-ood!!! It's open for lunch and dinner. Highly recommended!
It's just off the Hallim-ro, just a little ways back from the main road. It's near to three beach spots and Hallim Park. The owner use to be a designer, and has worked in London and Milan. He speaks really good English, and his wife does a little. Click on the middle photo for all Opening times. Google maps sends you to what looks to be the wrong place, so I have not included the link here.
The servers speak some English and they are very keen to practice. Here are some pictures of the inside, and the card. The card is printed on a very reflective background on both sides, so it was hard to get a good quality shot if it (;-)) Address: - 33 Yerae-ro Seogwipo-si Jeju-do Korea Tel 010 46997535 The burger coms to you in a glass dome that has some smoke around it, that gives it a very exotic look ;-) Hola Guapos y Guapas! Hola! is a small taqueria that offers beer, tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. It is the usually sized interior of local restaurants and has a nice feel to it. It is in the new development near the (Forchetta) roundabout, on the same side of the Lee Skin Spa (opposite side to Tony Burger) In the photos, you can see the pork quesadilla and the beef tacos - nice healthy portions and very tasty, with the added bonus of homemade corn tortillas. The corn tortillas are handmade by Jason Choi the owner (from LA), as are the pico de gallo and guacamole. Beer, sodas, and coffee are available for drinks. The prices were comparable to other restaurants in the area. The opening and closing times on the door say 11 am-11 pm. You can call the owner, Jason Choi (the broth4r of the original owner, Eric) if you are interested in him staying open for longer than 11 pm any night, or if you are thinking of taking a large group in one evening, to give him advance warning.
